Consumer Alert: OEB Warns Consumers of a Possible Scam

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is alerting Ontarians to a possible telephone scam. The OEB has received reports that individuals, claiming to be affiliated with the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP), were calling to request access into consumers’ homes. In two incidents last week, residents were contacted about the OESP, and notified that a home inspection was a condition of the program.

The OEB wants consumers to know that the OESP application and approval process does not require a home visit. OEB staff do not conduct a home audit, check furnaces or install equipment for this or any other program.

The OEB is taking these reports very seriously and is investigating further. If we determine that a company has broken the law or OEB rules, we will take enforcement action which could include charging a penalty and suspending, or taking away, a company’s licence to operate.
Consumers with questions or concerns about any sales calls or door-to-door experiences are encouraged to contact the OEB at www.ontarioenergyboard.ca within the hours of 8:30a.m. – 5p.m., Monday to Friday.

Quick Facts:
OESP eligibility and acceptance do not require a home audit or the installation of new equipment.

If a salesperson comes to your door, be sure to ask for identification and a business card.

Remember, never share personal information (for example, an electricity or gas bill) with a salesperson unless you want to enter into a contract.

If you are a customer of an electric utility and in a lower-income home, you may qualify for a reduction on your electricity bill through the OESP.

Consumers interested in the OESP can apply online at OntarioElectricitySupport.ca or call 1-855-831-8151 for assistance. • Eligibility for participating in the OESP is based on only two factors:

The number of people that live in your home; and

Your combined household income.

Brief Power Outages

North Bay Hydro’s System is Responding Well to Summer Power Outages

Animal contact and weather have caused brief outages throughout the city.

This summer has seen some North Bay residents experiencing brief power outages, primarily in the Ferris and Airport Hill neighbourhoods.  This has not been caused by any defects in North Bay Hydro’s electrical system, but rather because of animal contact and the weather systems that have been moving through.  Some residents have experienced up to 20 brief power outages this summer that have caused clocks to blink and computers and televisions to turn off and on.

North Bay Hydro says the problem isn’t with their system.  “Our system is performing safely and responding as it was designed to.  Unfortunately, animals such as squirrels have come into contact with power lines and brief outages occur.  Often the contact is fatal for the animal” stated Todd Wilcox, CEO of North Bay Hydro.

The high amount of storm systems and inclement weather North Bay experienced this summer has also contributed to brief power outages around the city.  When there is animal contact or storm events, the North Bay Hydro system clears and resets itself causing the brief outages.

Wilcox added that “these incidents have been more frequent than normal but our system has worked really well to reduce disturbances to residents.  We appreciate the public’s cooperation and informing us when they experience any outages.”

Robo Calls Happening in North Bay

Posted on

We have had reports of automated calls happening in North Bay and misrepresenting as North Bay Hydro. The call generally will indicate a past due account.

Note: North Bay Hydro does not use an automated outgoing call system and possible disconnection.

It’s important to recognize and report calls that aren’t legitimate. Be aware of calls claiming to be from North Bay Hydro or “Your Electricity Distributor” that ask for your banking or credit card numbers. Never provide this information over the telephone. You may also report the telephone call to The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, a Federal agency that collects information and maintains a repository for fraud analysis at 1 (888) 495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre.ca.

TIPS FOR RECOGNIZING TELEPHONE FRAUD

  • Who’s calling please? Don’t be afraid to request information from the caller so you can verify their validity. Don’t be afraid to hang up the phone.
  • What’s the hurry? Fast talkers using high pressure tactics could have something to hide. Most respectable businesses will allow you time to weigh your options.
  • Don’t disclose personal information about your account, bank accounts or credit card to any business that can’t prove it is legitimate.
